History of the Molly CherryThe Molly Cherry Bed and Breakfast - known as the Crown Jewel of Grayson was built in 1890 by JJ Fairbanks. This 110 year landmark of Denison has a colorful and varied history. JJ and his wife Edith built this beautiful home on 640 acres. The home has 4 fireplaces, 12 foot ceilings, 10 foot stain glass doors and various stained glass windows throughout the home. Each room was built with different wood, mahogany, pecan, cherry and the now extinct to Texas - Tiger Oak. Even the wood on the 200 lb pocket doors corresponds to the room -ie - mahogany on one side, tiger oak It has a grand staircase and amazing detailed woodwork throughout the home. JJ Fairbanks was a real estate tycoon - who came to Denison as a product of the railroad. He built his home in 1890 high on a hill at the edge of town. Rumor states he built this home to hold his gambling pursuits. There is a widows-walk on the roof top. The story goes that he kept a sentry posted on the widow's walk to keep watch for sheriffs and wives.... The house went through several owners and in 1979, the house was going to be demolished to make way for a car dealership. However, the wife of the car dealer, would not hear of it being destoryed. They moved the house downhill inspite of being told that it could not be done! It took 5 7-ton flatbed trailers to move the 250,000 pound - house over 200 yards straight downhill. This explains why the Molly Cherry is uniquely located on 7 wooded acres in the middle of Denison. In 2008, Walter and Lynn Marrable purchased the Molly Cherry Bed and Breakfast. We have spent the past months making this home even more beautiful! Come see us at the Molly Cherry Bed and Breakfast and be a part of Denison's colorful and varied history!
